Biological State Markers of Alcohol Abuse

چکیده
B markers are among the most promising tools for the early diagnosis and treatment of alcoholrelated problems. A biological marker is generally an abnor mal result of a blood test or other labora tory analysis, indicating the presence of an abnormal state or condition. This abnormal condition may refer to the presence of or susceptibility to a disease; it also may refer to an abnormal state brought about by exposure to a toxic substance, such as alcohol. Biological markers of alcohol abuse1 most often result from the excessive release of nor mal cell contents into the blood or urine. Laboratory signs of excessive and harm ful alcohol consumption can be divided into two main groups: trait markers and state markers. Trait markers are genetic, biochemical, or behavioral characteristics associated with a susceptibility to alcoholism. To be useful as trait markers, such characteris tics must be detectable throughout a person’s life—not only during drinking bouts but also during abstinence and prior

Biochemical Markers of Acute and Chronic Ethanol Use: Forensic and Clinical Applications
Background: The analysis of ethanol in bio-samples is an important method for determination of acute alcohol use/abuse both in clinical and forensic toxicology. In forensic cases, it is known that micro-organisms involved in the postmortem putrefaction process can produce alcohol and when the body has been traumatized. In clinical setting, post-ingestion time has a critical role for determinati...
متن کاملPHosphatidylethanol (PEth) concentrations in blood are correlated to reported alcohol intake in alcohol-dependent patients.
AIMS Phosphatidylethanol (PEth) is an abnormal phospholipid formed only in the presence of ethanol by the enzyme phospholipase D. PEth in blood is a promising new marker for ethanol abuse. None of the biological markers used at the present time is sensitive and specific enough for the diagnosis of alcoholism. METHODS The most frequently used alcohol markers [carbohydrate deficient transferrin...

NIDA Research Monographs are prepared by the research divisions of the National Institute on Drug Abuse and published by its Office of Science. The primary objective of the series is to provide critical reviews of research problem areas and techniques, the content of state-of-the-art conferences, and integra-tive research reviews. Its dual publication emphasis is rapid and targeted disseminatio...

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) was founded 40 years ago to help elucidate the biological underpinnings of alcohol dependence, including the potential contribution of genetic factors. Twin, adoption, and family studies conclusively demonstrated that genetic factors account for 50 to 60 percent of the variance in risk for developing alcoholism. Case-control studies...
متن کاملAlcohol Abuse Mediates the Association between Baseline T/C Ratio and Anger Expression in Intimate Partner Violence Perpetrators
The imbalance between testosterone (T) and cortisol (C) levels has been proposed as a possible marker of risk for intimate partner violence (IPV). Moreover, it could be related to a high probability of adopting risky behaviors such as alcohol abuse which, in turn, promotes the onset of IPV. This study tested the potential mediating effect of alcohol consumption on the relationship between basel...
